So the blog is ready to go and I haven't a clue about what to write.What I can't believe is that someone may actually want to read this. Maybe I'll go with what's bugging me today-the abuse of antibiotics.Why do people still not know the difference between bacteria and viruses? One would think that with all the free information floating out there on the ether,people would have caught on by now.Once again I will say it,the common cold is caused by a virus and is a self limiting illness and as my professor of medicine used to say,a cold takes a week with antibiotics and 7 days without.
I can fix my cold in three days-plenty of water,Neem infusions,steam inhalation and nasal irrigation with saline solution. Paracetamol and other symptomatic meds can control fever,pain,a runny nose etc.Apparently drug companies are not so excited about developing new antibiotics as they develop resistant organisms so fast due to abuse.

ReplyDeleteGood to know that you are irked with the fight against genetically modified tics going awry. Chemistry plays a big role in our lives and I'm thrilled that my son has taken a keen interest in the subject. The abuse of antibiotics can be reduced if there is a statutory warning printed on the strip clearly informing the do's and dont's. The drug companies should put some money into this not so wasteful act to make their money spent on developing antibiotics go the distance. This method should be adapted simply as none of you docs can write legibly nor have the time to tactfully provide the patients with the information. I've always wondered how the pharmacist gets to read the prescriptions that your lot write. You could even hand out printed notices about this with the prescriptions. Never-the-less you angels are a boon to the rest of us. Only wish you would take your act to the rural parts too where the truly needy live. Viva La Medico, La !
ReplyDeleteWell .. i find doctors under-paid, over-worked and yet thought as gods .... my experience at least, ask the right question and you get an opinion for consideration, the final decision is entirely up to you. When it comes to medicinal abuse ... all warnings in the world don't help as i have seen rural folks skimp and safe just to protect future outbreaks in their family and the worry that it won't be funded anymore ... better information and education is a process ... everyone is responsible ....
ReplyDeleteYes Jeev,like in ayurveda with a Nethi pot or a 20cc syringe and lens cleaning saline.Extremely effective.It is almost impossible to catch a cold if one does this regularly.
ReplyDeleteIf you understand why there is organised religion then you will know why people like to throw the God mantle on doctors.It's too much trouble to do it themselves so they look for the quick fix.It is a well known fact that if you lead a healthy lifestyle you will rarely need to see a doctor.In the event that you do catch a bug,you probably have most of the herbs in your kitchen or garden to self treat.I have patients who refuse to see me because I will not prescribe antibiotics when they ask for them.
Even nowadays I regularly see people in their 80's and 90's coming into hospital for the first time-generally in the process of dying from old age.
As most of one's immune system is in the gut,indiscriminate antibiotic use wipes out the original bacterial flora which invariably gets replaced by random bugs from the environment-in Malaysia,hawker food-which are not beneficial to the host.
You may have noticed that kids who are treated with antibiotics sometimes have diarrhoea or come down with another bug a week or two later.
Did you know that babies born by caesarean section,and those that are not breast fed are weaker and probably less intelligent then those that were born naturally. The stress of being pushed out through the tight vaginal canal strengthens-what doesn't kill ,makes them stronger.The germs in the mother's birth canal and around the nipple are essential for the baby's developing immunity.
The human nipple is not easy to suck on,ahem,and the action helps baby's brain development,as does holding the head up,turning over and crawling-all of which contribute to brain development.No amount of super formula can replace this.
Contrary to popular belief,children today are NOT smarter than those in earlier generations.
In fact there is more attention deficit and autism now.
During the last influenza epidemic,none of my staff in the emergency room caught it.They were not immunized either.My protection was daily saline irrigation and neem brew on alternate days.

Recently I was home for public holidays and weekends and my Dad asked me if I was still employed.For the last 20 years I have worked weekends and public holidays.I am in the private sector and have 50 days annual leave which I am unable to take.Essential services are a different kettle of fish altogether.
He he,completely forgot about this blog. Was caught up in other things which went off pretty well.2013 has started without a bang,which is great I suppose. I must say that 2012 was not as bad as I thought it would be. I am starting to get a better picture of what I want to dedicate the rest of my pitiable existence to. Being human I have this constant need to do and find-out stuff.
ReplyDeleteI have left the hospital I was working in for the past 10 years as there was no where else to go,developmentally. My new hospital seems to be a little more promising and it comes with a whole different set of challenges.
I know realize why I am so restless. A few months ago I was in the middle of some rather unmedical project,and me Dad comes up and watches for a bit and says,"wrong profession". After 20 years he still thinks I am in the wrong profession. This brought memories of my childhood. My Dad used to subscribe to a number of weekly Fleet Street publications,namely;"Treasure","Look and learn","World of wonder" and the "Magic Roundabout". These were children's magazines but the information in them was hardly childish.At 10 I already had an idea of Fashion,shoes,furniture through the ages.I knew about different warplanes and ships used in the different world wars and a few of the battle tactics.I knew weird facts about science and geography as well as botany.I also read the Children's Britannica cover to cover,just for fun-OK I was wierd.The one comic strip that really got my attention was this one about a guy who worked for an oil refinery,I think.It was called Troubleshooter. And I think that's what I want to be when I really grow up!
